Department of Anthropology

One of the prioirities of the Department of Anthropology since its foundation has been making the contemporary research in anthropology, folklore studies and sociolinguistics known to general public by publishing significant works in the field.

In the early 2000s the department published a series of volumes which included works by faculty, alumni and students. The full texts are available in Russian:

"The Works of the Department of Ethnology": Volume 1, 2001; Volume 2, 2004

"Anthropology. Folklore Studies. Linguistics": Volume 1, 2001; Volume 2, 2002

Subsequently, the "Studia Ethnologica" series was founded and has published nine books since then, including monographs and collected works by faculty and alumni, festschrifts in honor of the professors of the department,  publications of fieldwork materials, and more. Please visit the Russian page of "Studia Ethnologica"  to see the list and descriptions of the books published in the series.

Other books published at the Department of Anthropology (in Russian).

Since 2004, together with the Kunstkamera museum, and with the support of the European Humanities Research Centre at Oxford, the Department of Anthropology has been publishing the journal "Forum for Anthropology and Culture" - an interdisciplinary, international journal for anthropology, cultural studies, and cultural history.

Forum for Anthropology and Culture

One of the main aims of the journal is to foster productive dialogue between anthropology and cultural studies in Russia and elsewhere. The journal regularly publishes original work by scholars from outside Russia. Two issues a year are published in Russian (in June and December), and the Russian version is available online (published in March and September). An English-language edition, containing selected material from all of the issues, comes out each summer. The English-language version of the journal publishes selections from the Russian version; on its website you can find summaries of all the materials published in Russian issues. This makes outstanding work by Russian specialists in anthropology and culture available to a non-Russian audience.
