Press release

In recent months, we, as British academicians with a deep knowledge of and admiration for Russian culture and history, have become increasingly concerned by the situation at the European University, St Petersburg. We all know and respect the University's work, which has also been repeatedly recognised by international rankings of universities. In just over 20 years, since it was founded, the EUSP has established a worldwide reputation as a centre of excellence in humanities and social sciences. Its students and academics are making a major contribution, both at home and abroad, to intellectual life, and the books and articles published by its press and journals are of universally acknowledged importance. We know that the Rector, Oleg Kharkhordin, and his colleagues are doing all they can to address the objections that have been raised by Rosobrnadzor for alleged breaches of its regulations. We trust that the situation will be quickly resolved and that the European University will be able to return to the business of scholarship and teaching that it performs so outstandingly well, and that is vital to the international academic community, as well as to academic life in Russia.
