Doctor of Science in History, Professor Head of the Department of America, Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, Russian Academy of Sciences (Kunstkamera), Professor at the Department of Anthropology

Academic Interests еarly migrations and cultural contacts, peopling of America, comparative mythology, early complex societies

Biography

In 1970, Professor Berezkin graduated from the Department of History at Leningrad (St. Petersburg) State University with a degree in historical archaeology. Since his university years, he has not been able to decide which is more interesting: the iconography of pre-Hispanic Peru, or the archeology of southern Turkmenistan. After university, he served for two years in the army, and then in 1973 began to work in the American branch of Kunstkamera’s Anthropology and Ethnography Department, and stayed there until 1986. From 1987 through 2002, he worked at the Institute of Archaeology, and returned to Kunstkamera in 2003. He has been at the EUSP since 1996. In 1977 he defended his Candidate’s dissertation on Mohican iconography, and in 1990, his doctoral dissertation on the distribution of mythological motifs in South America, based on the continent’s habitation patterns and the spread of agriculture. Professor Berezkin has spent some 60 total months from 1966-1994 doing fieldwork. He has spent particular time working on the excavation of Neolithic settlements from the Middle Bronze Age in Turkmenistan (6th-3rd centuries BCE), which has combined with his research on the central Andes to incite his interest in the typology of early complex societies. Attempts to elucidate certain Mohican paintings (1st-7th centuries CE) have contributed to a systematization of South American folklore and mythology. After working in the United States from 1992-1993 and participating in the emergence of a computerized database on American folklore, Professor Berezkin’s interests expanded considerably, although he did not abandon his work on early complex societies. One of his special areas of interest is cosmonomy. In recent years, his work has mainly focused on habitation patterns in the New World (the analysis of area-based distribution of folk motifs in America and Siberia) and the history of the formation of plot-motivated Afro-Eurasian traditions. Working at the European University has helped him to understand changing trends in anthropological and archaeological scholarship, as well as develop his own stance in the field (he is a neoevolutionist).
