PRESS RELEASE

February 28, 2017

European University at St. Petersburg has signed a Memorandum to join the Climate Partnership of Russia on February 28, 2017.

Russian companies have introduced an initiative to consolidate the efforts of Russian business to mitigate environmental impacts and help prevent climate change by creating the Climate Partnership of Russia.

The main objective of the Partnership is to join the efforts of businesses for the transition to environmentally friendly technologies and a new level of responsibility in Russian economics.

"By joining the Climate Partnership we will combine our knowledge and efforts to create a balanced economy with Russian business leaders towards a transition to clean energy sources reducing the burden on the environment. The difficulty of the implementation of "green" projects is not just about the technical solutions to save resources and reduce emissions, it is rather found in the mechanism of decision-making. Our research center intends to promote the advancing expertise of Russian entrepreneurs to implement and finance such projects, as well as to create a system of incentives for the transition to cleaner energy,"- said Maxim Titov, Executive Director of the ENERPO Research Center at the EUSP.

European University at Saint Petersburg

European University at Saint Petersburg was founded in 1994 with the active support of the mayor of St. Petersburg Anatoly Sobchak. Due to its high professionalism and unique academic potential the University has acquired the reputation of one of the most dynamic and modern educational institutions in Russia. The University consists of five departments: Anthropology, History, Art History, Political Science and Sociology, Economics, and 11 research centers.

ENERPO Research Center

The ENERPO Research Center of the European University at St. Petersburg was established in 2015. As part of its research activities in the field of international energy policy the Center is engaged in the following areas:

  • Climate change and the role of Russia in the international climate agenda, including international security, the Arctic region, etc.
  • Development and implementation of financial instruments in order to attract long-term investment in cleaner energy sources and energy efficient technologies;
  • The administrative aspect of introducing new energy efficient technologies, clean energy and modernization projects as "change management."

Climate Partnership of Russia

The idea of establishing the Climate Partnership of Russia in November 2015 was supported by UC Rusal, Sberbank, Rosnano, RusHydro and Ingosstrakh, signaling a step forward to introducing new climate agreements at the upcoming UN Paris Climate Change Conference ("COP21"). Among the first to join the initiative were the Russian Network of the UN Global Compact, VTB Bank, the "Business Russia" public organization, etc. Partnering organizations believe that the "green" economy transition is impossible in the absence of a well-balanced system of market based and fiscal instruments which ensures that "green" investments are economically effective, both at the international and country levels. More than 20 companies have joined the Partnership. The updated list of participants is available online: http://climatepartners.ru/ .
